Meekail Ahmed Naseem, a candidate for the party's chairpersonship, has assured members that no one will be sidelined or marginalized for taking a side in the internal election.
During a press conference held by the "Ithubaaru" campaign team, a journalist raised a question regarding remarks made by former President Mohamed Nasheed. Nasheed had stated that members who support a specific side during the MDP internal elections should be relegated to the backlines once the election concludes.
Responding to the question, Meekail stated that the party must provide equal opportunities regardless of internal affiliations, adding that it is unacceptable for MDP members to be marginalized based on their allegiances.
He further stated that under his chairmanship, the path would be open for any member seeking to secure a position within the party's top leadership.
Meekail stated that general members have been expressing concerns regarding the stagnation of MDP's activities across the atolls. Noting that these activities have slowed down due to various reasons, he emphasized that the general membership does not wish to see the party divided under any circumstances.
He therefore provided assurances that he would not allow any opportunity for the party to become divided.
Furthermore, Meekail stated that he would establish a mechanism ensuring that general members and council members of the MDP have a meaningful voice in the party's affairs.
Highlighting the challenges faced in operating MDP offices across the islands, Meekail noted that party activities in some areas have come to a standstill due to a lack of adequate resources. He pledged to provide the necessary financial assistance to ensure these offices remain operational.
Meekail emphasized that significant changes must be made to the party's administration and overall approach, noting that these reforms will be implemented in consultation with the general membership.
Speaking on the future of the party, Meekail stated that significant efforts must be undertaken to increase youth representation within the MDP's membership.
He emphasized that to achieve this, new young faces must be integrated into the party's leadership. Meekail stated that he would provide opportunities for those seeking a political future, noting that his primary objective is to strengthen party administration and earn the trust of its members.
