The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that 10 individuals were arrested during a protest in Malé calling for the release of imprisoned 'Adhadhu' journalists Mohamed Shahuzaan and Leevan Ali Nasir.
The MDP legal team stated that 10 individuals arrested during the protest were brought before the court on Thursday for a remand hearing.
The protest began Wednesday night at the intersection of Chaandhanee Magu and Majeedhee Magu, led by members of the MDP. Senior party officials were in attendance, alongside the family members of the imprisoned activists, Shahuzaan and Leevan.
The protesters marched east along Majeedhee Magu before stopping at the Artificial Beach area, where they were joined by supporters of the PNF.
The protesters subsequently headed down Majeedhee Magu toward Alikilegefaanu Magu. However, police intercepted the demonstrators midway through Alikilegefaanu Magu.
Police arrested one protester at the scene before the crowd marched toward Chaandhanee Magu. The demonstrators then staged a protest at the junction of Majeedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu. However, as police moved to disperse the crowd from the area, one individual sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital.
During Wednesday night's protest, police seized a sofa that was being used by demonstrators. However, the item was later returned.
