Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that we cannot afford to abandon the Maldives.

Responding to a reporter's question during a press conference following a meeting with former presidents Abdulla Yameen and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Friday night, Nasheed stated that he could not abandon the Maldives, noting that extensive work has been dedicated to the nation.

He stated that the losses, bitterness, and grief endured throughout this endeavor have been significant.

Furthermore, Nasheed stated that certain conditions must be met for a nation to be governed effectively. In this regard, he emphasized that the freedoms of expression and assembly must be guaranteed.

Nasheed therefore gave his assurance that he would work to ensure a prosperous Maldives for future generations.

However, we cannot simply abandon the Maldives. This is our country too. Every one of us has contributed immensely to this nation, and the sacrifices we have made—the bitterness and the grief we have endured—are by no means small. We remain committed to ensuring that we pass on a prosperous Maldives to our children and future generations. Freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the freedom of assembly are essential pillars for a nation to function justly. Therefore, we must remain steadfast in our efforts to protect and uphold these fundamental rights.

Nasheed stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is a robust and established institution capable of guiding the Maldives toward the right path. He further affirmed that these efforts would be carried out through the party.
