Maimoon summoned by police over allegations of assaulting an officer during an MDP protest
Maimoon, the Vice President of the MDP Youth Wing, has been summoned by the police for allegedly assaulting an officer and obstructing police duties during a protest. Maimoon, who was previously arrested during a demonstration in April and released under specific conditions, also faces allegations of disrupting public transport and commercial activities. This vocal government critic has been summoned for police questioning on several prior occasions regarding various other matters.

The police have issued a summons for Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed, Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) youth wing, over allegations of assaulting a police officer and obstructing law enforcement during a recent protest.
The summons sent to Maumoon on Wednesday stated that he is required to present himself to the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building at 9:30 a.m. this Thursday.
The summons states that the questioning session for the suspect is expected to last approximately two hours.
He is being summoned in connection with an investigation into allegations of participating in an unlawful assembly on April 18, 2026. It is alleged that he gathered at various locations in Male' in violation of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, caused public disturbances, and obstructed public transport and commercial activities. Furthermore, he is accused of obstructing police officers in the line of duty, defying lawful orders, and physically assaulting officers.
Maimoon was among those arrested during the protest held on April 18. According to the MDP legal team, he sustained a four-inch laceration to his head during the arrest and received medical treatment at IGMH.
Following his arrest that night, Maimoon was released on the morning of Sunday, April 19, subject to four specific conditions.
These conditions include cooperating with the investigation, refraining from contacting any individuals involved in the case, notifying the authorities of any changes to phone numbers or residential addresses, and informing the police prior to leaving the Greater Male' area.
Maimoon is a young activist known for his vocal opposition to the government during protests. Due to his leading role in these demonstrations, he has been summoned by the police and had his statements recorded on previous occasions.
