Former Hulhumale' MP Ali Niyaz has stated that the leadership of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) must be handed over to a new generation.
Speaking at a street rally organized by Meekail Naseem’s campaign team for the MDP Chairperson election, former Hulhumale' MP Ali Niyaz stated that the time has come to hand over the party’s leadership to a new generation for the sake of its future. He emphasized that true change does not mean reappointing individuals who held the chairpersonship twenty years ago, but rather empowering young leaders like Meekail Naseem.
Explaining his reasons for supporting Meekail Naseem, Niyaz stated that despite his youth, Meekail is a seasoned and experienced figure in the political arena. Niyaz noted that as the MDP approaches its 20th anniversary, Meekail has dedicated 16 of those years to political activism. Furthermore, in terms of parliamentary experience, Niyaz described Meekail as being even more seasoned than himself.
In my view, the best course of action for this party at this moment, and for the future of the Maldives, is to appoint an MDP Chairperson who can lead inclusively and work collaboratively with a broad range of people. We are not yet discussing the 2028 elections; we are currently focused on organizing and strengthening the party internally. Some individuals claim the party is in a fragile state, but I question what they mean by "fragile." It is true that we are in a unique situation, but it is a position of strength. This unique situation stems from our recent success in a major election. After a series of previous electoral setbacks, we have achieved what many thought impossible by securing majorities in every city and across the vast majority of islands in the Maldives. This is the special circumstance in which we currently find ourselves.Former Member of Parliament for the Hulhumale' constituency, Ali Niyaz.
Highlighting that securing a second term as a Member of Parliament is impossible without significant public trust, Niyaz stated that Meekail has successfully earned that confidence. He further noted that Meekail represents the change needed to lead the party forward, working alongside all potential presidential candidates to present a comprehensive manifesto to the people.
Niyaz further emphasized that this is not the time to create divisions within the party. He stated that he would not support changes proposed by individuals who had contributed nothing to the party's significant past achievements. Asserting that the best path forward for the party's future is to appoint a Chairperson capable of working inclusively with a broad range of members, Niyaz expressed his full confidence in securing an election victory for Meekail Naseem.
