The President of the Elections Commission, Mohamed Zahid, has resigned.
Zahid resigned at approximately 2:03 PM on Friday. The Elections Commission’s Vice President and Spokesperson, Abdurrahman Salah Rasheed, confirmed the resignation to RaajjeMV. He stated that the Commission’s President had communicated his decision via a message, though no specific reason for the resignation was provided. Zahid was appointed as the President of the Elections Commission on January 26, 2025. At the time of his appointment, it was noted that he had previously been removed from his position as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) following a no-confidence vote by the 19th Parliament.
The Parliament approved Zahid's appointment to the Elections Commission during an extraordinary session held on January 16 last year. Prior to his appointment, two former members of the commission—former Vice President Ali Nashath and member Mohamed Asif—were removed from their positions.
Zahid is the first president of the commission to be appointed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu following legislative amendments passed by the 20th People’s Majlis, which granted the President the authority to appoint heads of independent institutions.
