Ibrahim Shujau, the Member of Parliament for the Baarah constituency, has made false allegations claiming that the previous MDP administration prioritized the advancement of RaajjeTV over the development of state media.
During Monday's People's Majlis sitting, MPs debated a resolution regarding Public Service Media’s (PSM) alleged discrimination against political parties. The resolution claims that the state broadcaster has failed to provide the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) with equitable opportunities to disseminate information to the public.
Debating the resolution submitted by South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, Shujau stated that instead of developing the state media, the previous MDP administration focused its efforts on promoting RaajjeTV.
Previously, during the MDP administration, we witnessed a concerted effort to prioritize the advancement of Raajje TV over the development of the state media. We saw technical staff and presenters being removed from the state broadcaster and transferred to Raajje TV throughout the MDP's tenure. Instead of strengthening and expanding the resources of the state media, the focus remained on bolstering Raajje TV. We observed that private outlet flourish, acquiring modern technology and advanced equipment while the state's own media infrastructure was sidelined.Ibrahim Shujau, Member of Parliament for the Baarah constituency.
Despite Shujau’s claims, RaajjeTV has noted that his statements are factually incorrect.
The resolution states that the objective of Public Service Media (PSM) is to remain a national media outlet that serves all regions of the Maldives, operating independently of influence and maintaining editorial freedom within the general principles and policies prescribed by law.
The resolution notes that Article 5(k) of the Public Service Media Act mandates the state media to provide its services without discrimination among the public. It further stipulates that Public Service Media must ensure equality in providing opportunities to both individuals and various organizations as part of its core policies.
