The court has postponed the delivery of closing statements in the first-degree murder trial of Ali Shahil, accused of killing Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, following lengthy deliberations regarding physical evidence. The presentation of closing statements in the intentional homicide trial of Ali Shahil, the prime suspect in the brutal murder of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, has been postponed. The victim was found dead in a Male' apartment in a case that shocked the nation.
When Shiau was found brutally murdered in a ninth-floor apartment at H. Sheereenvilla, young skater Shahil was arrested at the crime scene that same night. He is now facing five separate charges in connection with the case.
The charges include first-degree murder, possession of child pornography, and the use of cannabis. Out of respect for the family, the Prosecutor General’s Office has declined to disclose further details regarding the remaining two charges.
To date, he has been convicted of possession of child pornography and the use of cannabis. Following these convictions, he was previously sentenced to a prison term of 3 years, 1 month, and 6 days.
Although the presentation of closing statements for the remaining charges was scheduled for Monday's hearing, the proceedings could not be completed as the session was prolonged. During the hearing, the prosecution presented physical evidence to the court and provided detailed testimony regarding those exhibits.
Furthermore, the court granted Shahil the opportunity to examine certain pieces of evidence that had been previously placed under protective custody. This request was made by the defense to allow for a thorough review of the materials before presenting their arguments regarding the evidence. The process of reviewing these materials took a significant amount of time during the hearing.
Consequently, the hearing for the presentation of closing statements in this case has now been rescheduled for a later date.
The Shiaau case has been a long-standing matter, with significant delays even in bringing the case to the prosecution stage. At the time, police attributed the slow progress of the investigation to the difficulty in establishing a clear motive for the murder. Citing the autopsy report, police previously stated that Shiaau’s death was caused by injuries intentionally inflicted upon her. Furthermore, investigators revealed that her body had been subjected to extensive additional trauma even after she had passed away.
