Ali Shahil has been found guilty of several charges in connection with the brutal murder of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, who was discovered dead inside a Male' apartment.
When Shiau was discovered brutally murdered in a ninth-floor apartment at H. Sheereenvilla, young skater Shahil was arrested at the crime scene that same night. He is now facing five separate charges in connection with the case.
The charges include first-degree murder, possession of child pornography, and the use of cannabis. Out of respect for the victim's family, the Prosecutor General’s Office has declined to disclose further details regarding the remaining two charges.
He was found guilty of possession of child pornography and cannabis use. Following the conviction, he was sentenced to 3 years, 1 month, and 6 days in prison.
However, a verdict is yet to be reached on the primary charge of first-degree murder, as well as the two remaining charges. The delivery of closing statements for these charges is currently scheduled for April 27.
Following the closing statements, the court will proceed to deliver its verdict on the charges. If Sahil is found guilty of the charge of intentional homicide, he will face a severe sentence.
The Shiaau case has been a long-standing investigation. It took a significant amount of time before the case was eventually forwarded for prosecution. At the time, police stated that the investigation was delayed because they were unable to establish a motive for the murder. Citing the autopsy report, police previously confirmed that Shiaau died from injuries intentionally inflicted upon her. Furthermore, investigators revealed that her body had been subjected to extensive additional trauma even after death.
The murder of Shiaau is the most brutal killing in recent Maldivian history. When her body was discovered, she had been decapitated and her limbs had been severed.
