May 6 Attack: PG instructs police to expedite investigation into financiers of assassination attempt on Nasheed
The Prosecutor General’s Office has directed the police to expedite the investigation into the financiers of the May 6 terror attack and submit the findings promptly, while Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon stated that the Ministry holds additional information regarding the incident which will be shared with Parliament upon request. As the Criminal Court continues to record witness testimony in the ongoing trials of the accused, it is noted that former President Mohamed Nasheed required extensive medical treatment both locally and abroad for the life-threatening injuries he sustained in the blast.

The Prosecutor General’s Office has instructed the police to expedite the investigation into the financing of the May 6, 2021, assassination attempt on former President Mohamed Nasheed and to submit the case for prosecution as soon as possible.
The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that it advised the police on April 8 to expedite the investigation into the financiers of this act of terrorism and to submit the case to the office as soon as possible.
During the parliamentary session held on Monday, March 25, 2024, former Minister of Defence Ghassan Maumoon stated that the Ministry of Defence possesses additional information regarding the attack targeting Nasheed, which is yet to be shared with the Parliament.
Ghassan stated that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) will continue to provide legal protection to all individuals entitled to it under the law. He further noted that he possesses additional information regarding the May 6 attack. However, Ghassan clarified that this information would only be shared if the Parliament officially seeks to obtain it.
As the trials for those charged in connection with the attack targeting Nasheed continue at the Criminal Court, the most recent hearing was held on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. The case is currently at the stage of recording testimony from prosecution witnesses.
Nasheed sustained multiple serious injuries in the assassination attempt. After receiving initial treatment at ADK Hospital, he traveled to Germany for further medical care.
