MDP opens applications for Chairperson position
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has opened applications for its chairperson election until May 2, 2024, with the vote scheduled for June 12, 2026. The party specified that candidates must meet the same eligibility criteria required for parliamentary elections. So far, former President Mohamed Nasheed, Mickail Ahmed Naseem, and Alhan Fahmy have announced their intention to contest the position.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially opened applications for the position of Chairperson.
The MDP has announced that applications for the position of Chairperson will be open from Wednesday, April 22, 2026, until 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 2, 2026.
The eligibility criteria for candidates include being a registered member of the party and fulfilling all requirements for parliamentary candidates as stipulated in Article 73 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and Section 8 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.
The MDP has requested interested members to submit their applications via a Google Form. Applicants are required to include their criminal and debt records from the Department of Judicial Administration, as well as a completed criminal record clearance from the Maldives Correctional Service.
The election is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 12, 2026, with voting hours set from 2:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
According to the chairperson election timeline, only those registered as party members by April 22 will be eligible to vote. Furthermore, the final list of candidates, including their assigned candidate numbers, is scheduled for publication on May 3. On the same day, the registry of eligible voters will be released, and a three-day window will be provided for members to submit any complaints or disputes regarding the list.
Three individuals have so far expressed interest in contesting the election. They are former President Mohamed Nasheed, Member of Parliament for South Galolhu constituency Meekail Ahmed Naseem, and former Member of Parliament Alhan Fahmy.
