Police have once again obstructed the ongoing series of protests organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Male', during a demonstration held on Friday night.
Police were already active in the area surrounding the MDP headquarters even before the protest began. A significant number of officers were deployed, and each time protesters attempted to advance, police set up barricades and confronted the crowd to halt their progress.
As protesters marched through various streets, stopping at different locations, a police officer damaged a megaphone used by the MDP while the group was attempting to turn onto Majeedhee Magu from Janavaree Magu.
The police officer assaulted a protester holding a megaphone and attempted to seize the device. This sparked a confrontation between protesters and the police, resulting in injuries to several demonstrators.
The officer received no support from his colleagues during the incident and departed the scene shortly thereafter.
Protesters carried placards expressing various grievances and chanted loudly for President Muizzu’s resignation. They asserted that the government has lost its mandate, noting that it secured only 30 percent of the vote in the referendum held on the 4th of this month at the government's own initiative.
The MDP has presented 12 demands to the government aimed at restoring national stability during its ongoing protests.
