The Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) National Congress has passed a resolution to include former President Mohamed Nasheed and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the congress, appointing both as advisors to the party.
The decision was made during a meeting of the MDP National Congress held on Saturday night.
The resolution proposed by the party's interim chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, during the closed-door meeting outlined three key points.
The first of these measures involves amending the party's charter to grant permanent seats on the National Congress to any individual who has served as President of the Republic on the party's ticket, provided they remain members of the party. The amendment also stipulates that formal approval for this change must be sought at the earliest upcoming party congress.
The second objective is to establish a committee to advise the Chairperson on key party matters, ensuring its functions do not conflict with the responsibilities of the National Congress. The members appointed to this committee are:
- President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih or a representative designated by him.
- President Mohamed Nasheed or a representative designated by him.
- Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa
- Party President Abdulla Shahid
- Former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail
- The party's Parliamentary Group Leader
This committee will remain in place until a permanent chairperson is elected.
The third item on the agenda was the appointment of former President Mohamed Nasheed and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as party advisors. The resolution was seconded by Ibrahim Ziyad, the Member of Parliament for the Vaikaradhoo constituency and a member of the National Congress. The resolution was passed with 62 votes in favor out of the 63 members present at the National Congress meeting.
