Police reported that a tourist was injured in a shark attack while swimming near Gaafu Alif Kooddoo on the afternoon of April 11, 2026.
The victim in this incident has been identified as a male tourist from Spain. According to the police, he was initially treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Gaafu Alif Atoll Hospital before being medically evacuated to Male' for further treatment.
Police have confirmed that the tourist sustained severe injuries to both legs in the incident, with one leg requiring amputation due to the extent of the trauma.
Furthermore, police stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities added that they are currently carrying out the necessary procedural requirements and providing the required assistance.
According to international media reports, the tourist had traveled to the Maldives with his wife for their honeymoon. He is currently receiving medical treatment at ADK Hospital.
There have been previous instances in the Maldives where individuals have sustained various injuries following shark attacks while diving.
