As the people struggle to afford basic necessities like cooking gas and essential medicine, we can no longer afford to leave President Muizzu in power: Shifaz
Asserting that President Muizzu has lost public support, Shifaz has called on the People’s Majlis to impeach the President and transfer executive powers to the Vice President. He highlighted the country’s deteriorating economic situation, noting that citizens are facing increasing difficulties in accessing basic services and the Aasandha healthcare scheme. Furthermore, Shifaz urged the police not to obstruct peaceful political activities and encouraged the public to exercise their constitutional right to freedom of assembly.

Former Vice President of the MDP, Mohamed Shifaz, has stated that the Maldivian people are struggling to afford basic necessities and healthcare, asserting that they can no longer afford to leave President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in power.
Speaking at an MDP protest on Tuesday night, Shifaz called for President Muizzu’s resignation, asserting that the referendum held on April 4, 2026, served as a clear gauge of the public's support for the President.
He stated that President Muizzu secured only 29 percent of the vote in this election, asserting that the President has lost the public's mandate. He further argued that due to this lack of support, the People's Majlis should remove President Muizzu from office and transfer all executive powers to the Vice President, claiming this is the outcome the public desires.
Commenting on the current state of the nation, Shifaz stated that the public is struggling to access essential medical care due to the unavailability of Aasandha and NSPA services. He further noted that people are being marginalized and left in distress as they face shortages of fuel and gas, leaving them unable to cook. He concluded by asserting that President Muizzu cannot remain in power while the country continues to deteriorate to such a level.
The reality is clear: the Maldives has a functioning People’s Majlis, presided over by a Speaker. If the President is impeached during a parliamentary session and state powers are transferred to the Vice President in accordance with constitutional procedures, the President must step aside. Numerous individuals involved in the country's political landscape continue to voice their concerns regarding the nation's direction. You are serving us, the citizens of this country. It is from the taxpayers' money that your salaries are paid. We provide for your uniforms, your family expenses, your housing, your healthcare, and all your basic needs. We are the ones who sustain you. Therefore, you have no grounds to obstruct our peaceful political activities. Let me be very clear: you do not have that right.Mohamed Shifaz, the former Vice President of the MDP.
Furthermore, Shifaz highlighted that the "Green Constitution" guarantees numerous rights to the citizens and urged the public to exercise those rights.
Shifaz stated that the law guarantees citizens the right to engage in peaceful political activities, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly, asserting that no one should obstruct these rights. He further emphasized that the police service must facilitate the opportunity for citizens to conduct peaceful political activities.
