Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has alleged that Mohamed Abdul Rahman, the candidate for the ruling People's National Congress (PNC), spent over 30 million Rufiyaa to secure the Hinnavaru constituency seat.
Speaking at a rally held in Lh. Hinnavaru on Friday night to celebrate the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) success in the local council elections, Solih stated that Hinnavaru has always been an MDP stronghold and asserted that the party's ideology would continue to prevail in the island.
Referring to the loss of the Hinnavaru constituency seat by the MDP in the 2024 parliamentary elections, Solih stated that he had received information suggesting the government spent over 30 million Rufiyaa to secure the seat for its candidate.
Historically, the MDP ideology has only lost a parliamentary seat in this constituency once since the party's inception. In the past 30 years, this was the first time a seat here was won by an opponent of our vision and philosophy. This outcome was driven by the disillusionment following our defeat in the 2023 presidential election, coupled with the influence and power exerted by the current administration. I have been informed that the current representative spent over 30 million Rufiyaa in this constituency to secure that seat. Thirty million Rufiyaa. In a way, I take pride in the fact that a seat in this island is valued so highly. Moving forward, we will reclaim this seat once again.Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
Furthermore, Solih noted that since the introduction of the decentralization system, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has lost its majority and the council presidency only once. He emphasized that on every other occasion, the party has secured a significant majority.
Solih stated that if the MDP works collectively and remains connected with the people, the party can secure full majorities in future presidential, parliamentary, and local council elections. He further urged the party membership to work together in this manner to achieve these goals.
