President Muizzu’s public support has plummeted to just 30 percent: Niyaz
Former Member of Parliament Ali Niyaz has accused President Dr. Muizzu of deceiving the public regarding his commitment to strengthening the decentralization system, asserting that only the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) possesses the expertise to effectively manage local governance. Highlighting the MDP’s recent success in securing mayoral seats across five cities, Niyaz stated that these victories reflect the public's continued trust in the party and demonstrate that the decentralization framework can function successfully without the involvement of government-aligned candidates.

Former Member of Parliament for the Hulhumale' constituency, Ali Niyaz, has stated that public support for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has plummeted to just 30 percent.
Speaking at a rally in Lh. Hinnavaru to celebrate the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) success in the local council elections, Niyaz stated that the decentralization system is the primary pledge marketed to citizens by every presidential candidate seeking power. He noted that while every candidate claims they will be the one to most effectively strengthen the decentralized framework, no party other than the MDP truly understands how the system functions.
Niyaz stated that, with the exception of the MDP, previous leaders who governed the Maldives have consistently misled the public with promises to strengthen the decentralization system. He further noted that the incumbent President, Dr. Muizzu, had also pledged to become a champion of decentralization upon taking office. However, Niyaz remarked that the President has instead become a "champion" by undermining and defeating the very system he promised to uphold.
Dr. Muizzu claimed that upon taking office, he would become the champion of decentralization. However, he has only achieved this title by dismantling and crippling the decentralization system. In contrast, the Maldivian people want a true champion who empowers them by fully implementing the Decentralization Act. I call upon President Muizzu to stop prioritizing his personal interests over the welfare of the people.Ali Niyaz, the former Member of Parliament for the Hulhumale' constituency.
Niyaz stated that the results of the April 4 election demonstrate that the public has embraced and accepted the decentralized system of governance. He further noted that the people have sent a clear message that government-aligned candidates are not a prerequisite for the effective functioning of this system.
Niyaz stated that the MDP’s victory in all five city mayoral seats demonstrates that the public places the highest level of trust in the party to manage the local governance system. He further noted that the results prove the people desire leadership that understands decentralization, acknowledging that the MDP is the party that has successfully delivered the benefits of this system to the citizens.
