The Maldivian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu), and the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Dr. Salma Rasheed, have been dismissed from their posts.
Both officials were removed from their positions on Monday.
The dismissal of these two officials follows the emergence of a controversial audio recording in which Asma Rasheed, the Member of Parliament for Central Maafannu constituency, is allegedly heard encouraging voters to withhold support for the ruling People's National Congress (PNC). Among those removed from their posts is Mundhu, who is Asma’s son. The other official, Salma, is Asma’s younger sister.
The leak originated from a conversation between Asma and a young individual, an audio recording of which is currently circulating on social media. In the audio, Asma is heard criticizing the government. Furthermore, she repeatedly urges the individual not to vote for the PNC candidate until a high-ranking government position is secured.
According to a reliable source, State Minister for Fisheries Aminath Hussain Shareef may also be dismissed from her post following the leak of this audio recording.
Furthermore, it is possible that measures may be taken against certain members of parliament and ministers in the future.
