President Muizzu wants a PNC Mayor for Male' to inflict hardship on the citizens: Former MP Haleem
Former Member of Parliament Ahmed Haleem has criticized President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to secure a majority in the Male’ City Council, alleging that the President is prioritizing political dominance over the nation's welfare. Haleem suggested that the government seeks control of the council to suppress potential public unrest following proposed constitutional amendments, rather than to serve the community. He further claimed that the ruling PNC’s campaign is a strategic move to exert administrative authority and tighten its grip on the capital.

Former Member of Parliament for the Bilehdhoo constituency, Ahmed Haleem has claimed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to secure a PNC majority in the Male’ City Council and elect a PNC mayor are intended to suppress and mistreat the residents of the capital.
Speaking at an MDP campaign rally on Friday night, Ahmed Haleem stated that President Muizzu prioritizes winning every seat in the Male’ City Council over the current global situation and the fragile state of the nation.
Ahmed Haleem stated that even during the month of Ramadan, the President refrained from attending the office and instead spent his time on the streets of Male' solely for that purpose.
It is deeply concerning that the President has not stepped foot in the President's Office for over a month and a half. Instead, he is spending his days and evenings, even during the month of Ramadan, campaigning across Male'. I am troubled by the fact that he is neglecting the affairs of the nation to roam the streets of the capital alongside his entire cabinet, Sarangu Adam Manik, and Zahir. It makes me wonder why President Muizzu considers seizing control of the Male' City Council so vital at a time when the Maldives is facing such significant challenges. I cannot help but question why President Muizzu, First Lady Sajidha, Adam Manik, and Zahir are all dedicating themselves day and night to this City Council campaign. One must ask what their true motive is behind this relentless pursuit.Ahmed Haleem, the former Member of Parliament for the Bilehdhoo constituency.
He stated that due to the prevalence of this question, he had consulted with several colleagues who served as PPM members during the 19th Parliament and are currently serving as ministers in the PNC administration.
According to the ministers who shared the information, Haleem noted that President Muizzu emphasized that this is a presidential election and that the PNC would not face a more significant or crucial contest. He further stated that the President has instructed PNC members that the party must secure a decisive victory in this election.
The reason is that there is a significant constitutional amendment planned following an election victory. They insisted that winning the Malé election is absolutely essential for this change. I then questioned why winning the Malé election is so critical to a constitutional amendment, given that such changes are the mandate of the People’s Majlis. They agreed, but explained that this major shift would likely cause unrest within the city. They noted that when the MDP takes to the streets in protest, it would be difficult to maintain control of Malé through the enforcement agencies without the direct support and cooperation of the Malé City Council.Ahmed Haleem, the former Member of Parliament for the Bilehdhoo constituency.
Haleem stated that, considering these circumstances, it is evident that the PNC’s mayoral candidate and councilors are not seeking office to serve the people of Male'. Haleem further asserted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to secure a PNC majority in the Male' City Council and elect a PNC mayor are intended to suppress the public and inflict hardship on the residents of the capital.
