Ceremonial stakes driven into Kulhudhuffushi beach area for 2,000 housing units ahead of elections
While the previous administration's 400-housing unit project in Kulhudhuffushi remains stalled, the government has tasked HDC with resuming that project alongside the development of an additional 2,000 units; however, residents have criticized the recent foundation-laying ceremony for these 2,000 units ahead of the local council elections as a deceptive political move, given that physical work on the prior projects has yet to materialize.

Ahead of the upcoming local council elections, the government has laid the foundation stone for the construction of 2,000 housing units in Kulhudhuffushi City.
The foundation stone for a 2,000-unit housing project was laid during a ceremony held Wednesday night at the Veligandu area in Kulhudhuffushi City. The project was officially inaugurated by Minister of Housing Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Fisheries Ahmed Shiyam, Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, Kulhudhuffushi North MP Mohamed Dawood, Kulhudhuffushi South MP Faruhath Mohamed, and Bashir Ahmed, Design Director of Team One India.
The government awarded this project to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) during the President's visit to Kulhudhuffushi in August 2025.
In addition to this project, during President Muizzu's visit, the responsibility for completing the 400 housing units initiated by the previous administration in Kulhudhuffushi was also officially handed over to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
In this regard, although materials were brought in to resume a stalled 400-unit housing project just days before the election, physical work has yet to commence. Consequently, the laying of the foundation stone for an additional 2,000 housing units tonight is being viewed as a calculated move by the government to deceive the public ahead of the polls.
