The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has launched its "Afiringe Addu" (Our Addu) manifesto ahead of the upcoming Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched the manifesto during a special ceremony held in Addu City on Thursday night.
Following the launch of the manifesto, Addu City Mayor and MDP mayoral candidate Ali Nizar, along with Fathimath Hijra, the MDP candidate for the Women's Development Committee presidency, delivered a presentation detailing the manifesto's key components.
During the presentation, Nizar stated that Addu's progress can only be achieved through an independent mindset unique to the city. He noted that the "Afiringe Addu" (Our Addu) manifesto was developed with these principles in mind. Nizar highlighted that the manifesto outlines an extensive vision for a resilient and prosperous Addu. He further emphasized that this vision is not built on unrealistic dreams, but rather on achievable goals. He concluded by noting that the manifesto incorporates all the necessary elements for a productive, cohesive, and thriving Addu.
"Our objective is to work towards establishing an independent economy. One of the greatest challenges facing Addu is the lack of a sustainable economic framework. We must prioritize the greening of Addu and fully harness the potential of our maritime resources. This manifesto is committed to transforming Addu into a lush, shaded, and pleasant environment to live in," Nizar stated.
Furthermore, Nizar stated that the manifesto was formulated with careful consideration of the frameworks and models utilized in the development of modern cities.
Speaking at the gathering, Hijra stated that the manifesto includes measures to increase youth participation in civil affairs. He emphasized that priority has been given to ensuring young people have a voice in the council's decision-making processes. In this regard, he noted the decision to hold an annual youth forum. Furthermore, he highlighted other key initiatives outlined in the manifesto.
Other key highlights of the manifesto include road infrastructure improvements, the enhancement of neighborhood gyms across the city, and the construction of a synthetic running track. Additionally, the plan outlines efforts to integrate sports with economic development, alongside various other initiatives aimed at addressing public needs.
