President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has dissolved atoll councils and stripped other local government bodies of their authority. However, the President recently stated that he does not believe in undermining the power of councils. He further emphasized his commitment to empowering local authorities instead.
Speaking on the matter, President Solih stated that the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) would be well aware of the public sentiment if they engaged with people directly on the streets and in their homes. He asserted that the current public pulse does not align with the PNC. He further noted that it is now very clear to the government that the citizens desire representatives who will work closely with them.
The current rhetoric regarding the empowerment of local councils is merely a reaction to public sentiment. However, the citizens are well aware that these claims are nothing more than falsehoods.Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
Former President Solih further stated that the results in Vilimale' demonstrate the extent of public opposition to President Muizzu’s policies. He noted that the public appreciates the transformations brought to Vilimale' under the leadership of Male' City Mayor Adam Azim. He emphasized that the overall spirit of Vilimale' remains aligned with the MDP. Furthermore, he asserted that whether looking at Vilimale' or Male' City as a whole, the MDP is the only party capable of delivering development, and urged the public to vote for MDP candidates in the upcoming Council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections.
