President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the physical work for the land reclamation project in Th. Veymandoo has officially commenced.
In a post on X on Thursday night, President Muizzu announced that work has commenced on the additional land reclamation project for Veymandoo.
The project is being carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
During President Muizzu’s visit to Thaa Atoll in September last year, a public meeting was held with the residents of Veymandoo on 24 September 2025. During this gathering, the administration officially commissioned projects for land reclamation, harbor development, and the modernization of the island's road network to contemporary standards.
During the session, President Muizzu stated that a total of 25 hectares of land would be reclaimed under the Veymandoo land reclamation project.
According to MTCC, the project scope includes the construction of an 819-meter revetment and a 220-meter groin.
The project was awarded to MTCC for MVR 113.19 million, with a completion period of 270 days.
Veymandoo, home to a population of 1,270 people, has been facing severe land scarcity. However, the completion of the ongoing land reclamation project is expected to resolve this issue, creating sufficient space for residential plots. Furthermore, the expansion will provide additional land designated for industrial activities.
The land reclamation of Veymandoo was a key presidential pledge of President Muizzu, a commitment he reiterated during the previous parliamentary election campaign. However, despite the administration being nearly two years into its term, no progress had been made on the project until now. Residents are now alleging that the physical work on the project has finally commenced only to coincide with the upcoming local council elections.
