Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that it is evident the momentum for the upcoming local council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections is firmly behind the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
He made these remarks during an interview with RaajjeMV on Thursday night, amid the MDP’s "door-to-door" campaign activities. He stated that campaign efforts across the atolls and in Male' have clearly demonstrated that the public stands firmly with the MDP. President Solih further noted that the people are eager to see the country’s affairs improved and brought back onto the right track.
"Everyone agrees that the policies have truly failed, and the public has been forced to endure numerous hardships over the past two years. Furthermore, there is significant public concern regarding the rushed manner in which the referendum is being conducted. The people are ready to say no," he said.
Former President Solih further stated that the Parliament's decision to pass a resolution for a referendum on holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously was made very abruptly. He suggested that there are likely hidden motives behind this referendum.
Furthermore, President Solih stated that the current administration is acting in a manner that undermines the voting rights of the citizens. He noted that actions such as transferring or dismissing employees from their jobs are being carried out to exert pressure on the public. He emphasized that every individual should have the opportunity to participate in the political activities of their choice.
