Dengue fever on the rise in Addu City; 48 cases reported so far this month

Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) has reported a surge in dengue fever cases since the beginning of the year, urging the public to remain vigilant against the disease.
According to Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH), 51 cases of dengue fever were reported in January, with 48 cases recorded so far this month. The highest number of dengue cases have been reported from the districts of Hithadhoo and Feydhoo.
Furthermore, Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures as the disease continues to spread. The hospital advised the public to seek immediate medical attention if a fever persists for more than three days, or if symptoms such as decreased urinary output, extreme fatigue, or any form of unusual bleeding occur.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant as dengue fever spreads in Addu City, while the Health Protection Agency (HPA) noted a significant nationwide surge in communicable diseases across all atolls last month. According to the agency, dengue cases rose from 424 recorded in December 2024 to 647 reported in January.
Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. To prevent infection, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) advises the public to wear clothing that covers the body and to utilize mosquito repellents, such as lotions and sprays. The HPA further urges residents to keep doors and windows closed during dawn and dusk, when mosquito activity is at its peak. Additionally, the agency emphasizes the importance of proper waste disposal, advising against discarding empty bottles, cans, or other containers in yards or on the streets, and calling for the regular cleaning of any areas where stagnant water may collect.
