The National Congress of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed a resolution to oppose the proposal of holding presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently with the upcoming local council elections.
The resolution, proposed by South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem and seconded by South Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Nazil, was passed unanimously by the National Congress with 49 votes, including the chair.
In the resolution submitted by Meekail, he emphasized that in a democratic state like the Maldives, it is essential to consult the public or seek their input on significant matters directly affecting them. However, the resolution noted that no public consultations were held prior to the submission of the constitutional amendments to Parliament.
Meekail stated that instead of allowing adequate time and opportunity to review and deliberate on the constitutional amendments, efforts were made to rush the bill through the passing stage. Furthermore, he noted that while the government aims to synchronize the two elections, holding a referendum alongside the local council elections would not provide sufficient time for public awareness, information dissemination, or campaigning.
Meekail further asserted that the move lacked any clear policy, sound reasoning, specific objective, or strategic planning. The resolution was passed along with an amendment rejecting the proposal to synchronize the elections. This amendment was proposed by the parliamentarian for Kendhoo constituency, Mauroof Zakir.
