Muizzu distributed 16 million Rufiyaa to a select group in front of PNC candidates: MP Abbas
Abbas stated that this is the ultimate level of hypocrisy a leader can exhibit.

President Mohamed Muizzu met with residents of the Sinamale' and Male' hiya flats at the official presidential residence, Mulee'aage, where he pledged to provide MVR 100,000 to each household. Candidates from the People's National Congress (PNC) also participated in the meeting. | X | X
Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas has expressed concern over President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu distributing 16 million Rufiyaa to a group of individuals in the presence of candidates from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC). These remarks come as the Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections approach.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Abbas stated that the Muizzu administration claims it restricted councils from initiating new projects or hiring staff during the final year of their five-year terms as a measure to prevent corruption.
"They seated the PNC council candidates right in front of them and waived 16 million Rufiyaa in unpaid rent for those who had violated their agreements," Abbas stated.
On Monday, President Muizzu announced a relief package for the owners of Sinamale' 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as Male’ Hiya 1 and 2. As part of this initiative, all outstanding fines incurred due to non-payment will be fully waived. Furthermore, in recognition of the prolonged lack of solutions regarding the deteriorating structural integrity of these aging buildings, the President has decided to grant a payment of MVR 100,000 to each household as a form of compensation.
MP Abbas questioned, "The question is, why has this not been extended to those living in social housing units across the islands?" He further asked, "Why has this same consideration not been granted to the residents of the Vinares and Hiyaa flats?"
Abbas also questioned the rights of the thousands of people living in Male' and the atolls who are forced to endure exorbitant rental prices.
"A leader can only be this hypocritical. The people will have the final say," Abbas said.
President Muizzu held a meeting at the official residence, Mulee'aage, on Monday afternoon with residents of the Sinamale' and Male' Hiya flats. The gathering included Moosa Ali Jaleel, the ruling party’s candidate for Male' City Mayor, Aishath Alaika Adnan, the party’s candidate for the Women's Development Committee presidency, and several other council candidates from the party. Public criticism has mounted following the event, with many accusing the administration of misusing state resources for political campaigning by hosting candidates at the official residence. It is also noted that this is not the first time President Muizzu has convened such meetings with political candidates at Mulee'aage.
