Combining the two elections is a systematic attempt to restrict the powers of the people: Shahid
Abdulla Shahid has alleged that the decision to synchronize presidential and parliamentary elections is a calculated maneuver designed to sideline opposition members through a deceptive scheme. He characterized the move as an undemocratic measure intended to restrict the public's voice and undermine established democratic principles.

The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid, has stated that synchronizing two elections is a systematic attempt to curtail the powers of the citizens.
Shahid made these remarks while addressing a meeting of the MDP National Congress held on Thursday night.
Speaking during a debate at the MDP National Congress regarding a referendum to decide on holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously with the upcoming local council elections, Shahid stated that this move is part of a deceptive plot.
Shahid described the move as a highly systematic attempt to deceive the public. He noted that the Parliament passed the resolution to hold a referendum on consolidating elections only after opposition members were forcibly removed from the chamber. Shahid further asserted that the manner in which the process was conducted is sufficient evidence that the initiative is not being pursued in good faith.
"The two opportunities for the public to voice their opinion are being merged into one. After speaking out once every five years, the people will be forced to remain silent," Shahid said.
Shahid further emphasized that the MDP remains a party that consistently advocates for the rights of the people and strives to ensure their voices are heard. He stated that restricting opportunities for public expression is contrary to the party's core principles. Furthermore, Shahid reaffirmed that the MDP is a party committed to upholding the values of democracy and good governance.
