A meeting of the MDP National Congress - 08.12.2025
The National Congress of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has approved a decision to hold the election for a permanent chairperson only after the upcoming Local Council Elections.
During the MDP National Congress meeting held on Monday night, President of the Hoarafushi constituency and former Member of Parliament for the Hoarafushi constituency Ahmed Saleem proposed that the election for the permanent chairperson be conducted following the Local Council Elections.
His proposal was passed with the votes of 58 members who participated in the meeting.
Saleem said the reason for proposing the postponement was to ensure that a major party election of this nature does not overshadow the Local Council Elections.
The MDP chairperson position became vacant after the resignation of former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, who previously held the post.
At the same National Congress meeting on Monday night, Abdul Gafoor Moosa, Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency, was elected as the party’s interim chairperson. National Congress member Ilham Ahmed nominated Abdul Gafoor Moosa for the interim chairperson position, and he was elected with 65 votes out of the 66 members present at the meeting.
Abdul Gafoor Moosa expressed his gratitude to the members who voted for him.
Abdul Gafoor Moosa is the longest-serving member of the MDP Parliamentary Group and has also served for a significant period in Parliament.
