Members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group entered the Ministry of Finance and Planning on Monday afternoon, protesting Finance Minister Moosa Zameer’s continued failure to respond to summons by the People’s Majlis.
MDP lawmakers noted that despite repeated requests to appear before the legislature to address concerns over the government’s unpaid dues to various companies and broader financial management issues, Minister Zameer has not attended any scheduled sessions nor provided an explanation for his absence.
The situation escalated when MDP parliamentarians attempted to enter the Finance Ministry premises. They were initially obstructed by police officers stationed at the entrance. The MPs, however, asserted their constitutional rights and parliamentary privileges, arguing that they were legally entitled to access the premises in pursuit of their oversight duties.
As tensions rose, members of the public and MDP supporters gathered outside the ministry, chanting slogans and demanding Minister Zameer’s resignation. After a brief standoff, the MPs forcefully entered the building, accusing the police of unlawfully obstructing elected representatives in the exercise of their duties.
RaajjeMV understands that, following their entry into the building, arrangements were initiated to schedule a meeting with Minister Zameer.
MDP members present at the scene criticized the government's handling of the country’s financial affairs, accusing it of a lack of transparency, accountability, and responsibility in managing public funds.
The finance ministry and Minister Zameer have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
