The People’s Majlis has wrapped up its third and final session for the year 2025 and officially gone into recess.

The 28th and final sitting of this year’s last session was held on Wednesday.

During the session, a total of eight matters were put to a vote.

Several significant bills were successfully passed, including the amendment bill to the Drugs Act, which proposes the death penalty for individuals involved in importing illicit drugs and the Zakat Bill.

In addition to this, the amendment bill allowing government-owned companies to lease islands, land, or lagoons for the development of tourist resorts or integrated tourist resorts was also passed during Wednesday’s sitting.

Following the completion of the agenda items and the casting of votes, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who presided over the sitting, officially announced the commencement of the parliamentary recess.

The speaker shared details of the work accomplished during this session, stating that 28 sittings were held, during which members spent approximately 64 hours on the parliamentary floor.

He further highlighted that 15 bills were passed during the session.

Further, 29 questions were posed to ministers, nine motions were concluded from the speaker’s table, and 16 matters were introduced by the government.

Elaborating on committee work, the speaker announced that 142 committee meetings were convened during the session, with members dedicating 120 hours to committee discussions.

Although the final sitting of the session was held on Wednesday, parliamentary regulations stipulate that the session should have concluded by the end of November.

The session was extended due to crucial work pending.

Following the recess, parliament’s work will resume with the first session of next year, scheduled to commence on February 1.
