The People’s Majlis has approved the appointment of Ahmed Mahloof as Maldives’ Ambassador to Japan.
His nomination was unanimously endorsed by 60 lawmakers during Wednesday’s parliamentary sittings.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted Mahloof’s appointment for parliamentary review, and the matter was examined by the Majlis Foreign Relations Committee.
As part of its review, the committee sought information from the President’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Elections Commission, Maldives Correctional Service, and the Department of Judicial Administration.
Mahloof was also interviewed to assess his suitability to represent the Maldivian state and carry out the duties of an ambassador.
Following its assessment, the Foreign Relations Committee unanimously decided, during a meeting attended by its members, to recommend parliamentary approval for his appointment.
Mahloof joined the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) at a rally held in Malé City on 14 November 2025.
Prior to that, he left the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), saying he intended to serve in a state position.
His decision drew criticism from several within the opposition, who accused him of disloyalty and shifting parties for political gain.
Mahloof first entered politics through the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and was elected to the first Majlis elected under the current constitution, representing South Galolhu constituency on a DRP ticket.
After internal disputes within DRP, he joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), formed in 2011, and held several senior roles there.
He later distanced himself from PPM following disagreements with former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, though he continued to work with MDP during Yameen’s administration.
Mahloof formally joined MDP during the transition period following the 2018 presidential election and served as Minister of Youth in the MDP government.
After the administration ended and following a period of disengagement from party activities, he then signed with PNC.
President Muizzu’s PNC marks the fourth political party Mahloof has joined.
