Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that eight cases linked to gang-related crimes have been sent to the Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) for prosecution so far this year.
The cases were forwarded for prosecution as part of ongoing efforts by the police institution to prevent gang crimes.
Publicizing statistics of the work done by the Gang Crime Enforcement department between January 1 to August 31 this year, MPS revealed that 67 individuals were arrested during this period, of which 22 are still in police custody.
15 individuals have been transferred to remand jail and 30 individuals have been released from police custody so far.
According to the police, the number of individuals stopped and questioned during this period sits at 12,253. This includes 331 under the age of 18.
MPS went on to reveal that during this period, eight cases were sent to the PG's office requesting prosecution.
Further, the police institution has revealed that police officers will be stationed statically in areas where gangs are active in the congested capital Malé City as well as its suburban extension Hulhumalé, as part of the ongoing operations.
