Bill on Evidence sent to Parliament

Amended bill on Local Council Elections will be voted

First reading of bill tabled for today

Bill key to judicial justice system

The Bill on Evidence has been sent to the Parliament.

The Bill was sponsored by Fuvahmulah North MP Ali Shah. The debate on the Bill has been scheduled for debate on the third session of the Parliament this year.

The Parliament on Wednesday will hear the report on the proposed amendments to the Local Council Elections Act.

The report was prepared by the Parliament Committee on National Security. The amendments were proposed by Holhudhoo Constituency MP Ali Mohamed.

Forty-one MPs had voted to accept the bill, with 23 MPs voting against the motion. Opposition MPs allege that the bill was a travesty, to aid and abet the illegal actions of the Government. They claimed that there were no candidates with PPM who fit the criteria, given that most potential candidates had no integrity.

Some members of ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) had also voiced against the Bill, with many advocating for amendments to the Bill at the Committee stage.
