MDP holds first National Council meeting with leader Nasheed, since his sentencing in 2015

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held its first National Council session with its leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed, since his arrest and subsequent imprisonment in 2015.
The National Councilmeeting began at 10 am on Wednesday in Sri Lanka.
Nasheed, who was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment on terror charges in March 2015, traveled to Sri Lanka on Sunday, with other senior MDP members following shortly. They have held a number of high-level meetings, prior to the National Cpuncil session today.
Speaking to RaajjeMV. MDP’s deputy chair, Ali Niyaz said that the purpose of holding the session in Lanka was to hold the meeting with members of its National Advisory Committee. Authorities have cancelled the passports of a number of senior MDP officials, who have been granted political refugee status abroad.
While Niyaz said the details of the session will be shared with its National Council members, he did not reveal whether any resolutions were passed at the meeting.
According to Niyaz, former President Mohamed Nasheed will share the details of the meeting with the public, after discussions with the shadow cabinet of the opposition coalition, Maldives United Opposition (MUO).
A shadow cabinet meeting is scheduled for 10 am on Thursday. MUO’s shadow cabinet members have also traveled to Lanka, to take part in the meeting.
"The former President is also to meet with MDP members and supporters on Thursday," said MDP.
