The national waste management programme has been unveiled.

First Lady Sajida Mohamed inaugurated the national waste management programme named ‘Magey Saafu Raajje’ which translated means ‘my clean Maldives’, during a ceremony held at the Malé Waste Transfer Station on Thursday.

With the inauguration of the programme, the people will now be allowed to participate in providing eco-friendly and sustainable waste management services.

Designed to formulate and implement a nationwide island waste management project, the national programme comes under the administration’s commitment under the economy and environment section of the ‘Hafthaa 14’ roadmap.

The programme carries the purpose of formulating comprehensive waste management systems implemented in an eco-friendly, sustainable manner.

Further, it also aims to develop regional centers which will be capable of transporting the waste needed to be removed from islands, as well as disposing of it using eco-friendly methods.

The programme aims to facilitate waste transportation between regional centers and islands and to conduct training programmes and awareness activities for safe waste management at island and regional levels.

The ceremony saw the government of Japan making a donation of 48 garbage collection vehicles to the Maldivian government.

The donation was received by Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Tariq Ibrahim on behalf of the Maldivian government.
