WAMCO opens waste collection registration for more zones
WAMCO has opened registrations for garbage collections in zone two and three (both in Henveiru ward of Malé City).

The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has on Saturday opened registrations for garbage collection in zones two and three.
WAMCO had divided Malé city into 10 domestic zones, in what the corporation described as a bid to systematize waste management in the capital.
The corporation held collection runs for zone one, from Kalaafaanu School to Adi Park, in December 2016.
WAMCO’s Managing Director Ibrahim Fuad said the corporation has already made the necessary preparations to collect waste from the two zones. Registrations will close, and runs will start on March 1st.
MD Fuad said WAMCO has brought in 20 tricycles that can carry 240 kgs of garbage and 10 compact pickup trucks with a capacity of 2.5 tonnes.
The tricycles will allow WAMCO to collect garbage from homes in narrow streets, which are most streets in the island. Another truck, one with the capacity to carry 1.5 tonnes, Fuad continued.
Households have to pay MVR 150 a month for daily garbage collection if they live in apartments, and MVR 100 if it is all accumulated and placed outside.
Most houses hire expatriate workers who are often employed by multiple households and carry large amounts on bicycles. Due to a lack of enforced regulations, bags of trash can often spill onto the road.
Further, the waste from Malé is often not separated, resulting in diverse waste streams complicating the incineration process.
