Getting more signatories for the Cape Town Agreement will curb illegal activities taking place, says Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture, Zaha Waheed.
Over 50 countries have already signed the Cape Town Agreement, which will be a key tool in warding off illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.
The government of Maldives has begun work to participate in the Cape Town Agreement in an effort to protect and enhance security of Maldives waters, from illegal activities.
The Cape Town Agreement will also help protect the environment
As such the minister stated that getting most countries to sign this agreement will curb and deter from the illegal activities which are taking place.
The ministry stated that the agreement will help enhance the protect local fishermen from pirates, and stop illegal fishing activities. Such illegal activities have a major impact on the country’s fishing community.
According to reports, about 2,000 individuals in the fishing community worldwide die due to such incidents.
