55 new Covid-19 cases were reported in the Maldives on Friday.

The cases include 31 locals, 21 Bangladeshis, two Indians and one Sri Lankan national.

While the cases were confirmed from the 795 tests conducted within in 24 hours, it pushes the country’s total case count to 3,175.

Further, an additional 70 recoveries were reported on Friday. A total of 2,458 patients have recovered in the island nation thus far.

While there have been 15 deaths to Covid-19, there are currently 647 active cases.

Maldives’ first Covid-19 cases were confirmed from resorts in early March, and a community spread was detected on April 15 after a woman with no recent travel history tested positive for the virus upon consulting at a clinic.

The greater Malé region was immediately placed on lockdown, and authorities began lockdown easing on May 29.

While the country is currently in the third phase of the ease plan, the number of locals testing positive for Covid-19 has since spiked.

Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) officials revealed that most of the cases are being detected from government offices, which reopened during the third phase on July 5.
