Maldives has confirmed 17 new cases of the global Covid-19 pandemic on Thursday.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed the latest statistics of the Covid-19 situation in the island nation, adding that the new cases include 10 locals, six Bangladeshis and one Indian national.

With this development, the country’s Covid-19 case count has risen to 3,120.

Further, with 31 new recoveries reported by 6pm Thursday, the total number of recoveries has been pushed to 2,428.

Maldives currently has 626 active cases of the infection, with 501 individuals remaining in isolation facilities and none in quarantine.

The country’s death count sits at 15.

Following the implementation of the lockdown ease plan on May 29 after over a month since the Greater Malé Region was locked down on April 15 following the detection of a community transmission of the virus, cases have been observably surging.

Authorities have been stressing that the number of individuals requiring treatment at hospital is alarming as well and there have been fears of increasing cases leading to a second lockdown.
