Maldives will host the Group E matches of the AFC Cup 2020.
Football Association of Maldives (FAM)’s President Bassam Adeel Jaleel announced that the country has won the bid to host the group stage of the competition.
FAM officially submitted the bid to host the AFC Cup 2020 group stage last week, with the support of the sports ministry.
Matches of the AFC Cup 2020 were halted following the Covid-19 pandemic. While they are resume in October, the Asian Football Confederation has decided that the remaining matches between South Asian teams will be held at a common stadium.
The group stage will end by November 4.
The FAM president also expressed hope for success, as well that the two local clubs competing in this year’s AFC Cup reaches the next stage.
The two clubs are; Maziya Sports and Recreation Club and TC Sports Club. India’s Chennai City FC and Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings complete the South Asian teams’ group.
While the remaining matches of the AFC Cup 2020 is to begin on October 23, two matches are to be played each day.
Further, the last two matches of the group stage will be held simultaneously. Hence, the matches will likely be held at the National Football Stadium in the capital as well as the one in southernmost Addu City.
