A white alert has been issued in the north for heavy rain showers and thunderstorms.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) issued the new alert over regions where adverse weather is expected to prevail in the north and is the second such alert issued since Sunday morning.

The alert was issued from Haa Alif atoll to Lhaviyani atoll and is to remain effective from 1:10pm to 5:30pm.

During this period, heavy rain showers and thunderstorms with winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour will prevail over these regions.

The general weather forecast until 10pm, June 8 predicts scattered rain showers and a thunderstorms over the entire country, with a few heavy showers at times.

Further, the department revealed that surface winds will vary from southwesterly to westerly at 7 – 17 miles per hour. Winds may gust to 40 miles per hour during showers, predicted MET.

Seas are expected to be moderate becoming rough during showers throughout the island nation and MET has urged everyone to practice caution against the adverse weather conditions.
