President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that there will be "zero tolerance" for child sex abuse.
During a meeting with his cabinet on Tuesday at the President's Office, discussions focused on fast-tracking child-sex abuse cases by collaborating with the relevant authorities and prevention against such cases.
Highlighting the importance of understanding the prevalence of child molestation in the country, the president stated that his administration has "zero tolerance" for child sex abuse.
As such, the president held discussions with relevant government authorities on January 18th regarding the case of sexual violence and rape of a two-year-old toddler by her grandfather and great-grandfather in a Kanduhulhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll. The President denounced the disgusting act and strongly urged the relevant authorities to conclude investigations, post haste and deliver justice to the victim.
The Ministry of Gender, especially Minister Shidatha, has come under fire, with many members of the public calling for her resignation since reports of the rape surfaced.
