Police denies rumors of abuse against those arrested in Yameen’s murder
MDN claims suspects in Yameen’s case were excluded, abused
Claims suspects have been denied access to lawyers
Police denies the claims

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has denied the claims made by the Maldivian Democratic Network (MDN) that those arrested in connection to the murder of blogger and social media activist Yameen Rasheed, were being abused.

The claim made by MDN said that ‘detainees held in connection to Yameen Rasheed's murder are held in unauthorised places w/o access to lawyers’.

MDN also said that ‘reports of torture and inhumane treatment to those detained’ had also come to their attention.

Speaking to Raajje.mv, Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said the claims made by MDN were baseless. Shifan said that no inmate had been detained illegally and that the same was applicable to Yameen’s murder. Shifan denied rumors of torture and inhumane treatment, adding that all inmates were treated exactly the same and all had their rights.

Police had said that seven had been arrested in connection to the murder, with six presently in custody.
