A resolution calling to establish a ‘national shipping line’ has been proposed to the People’s Majlis.
The proposal was made by Makunudhoo constituency MP Mohamed Raai, with the aim to control import freights and to ensure national security, at Monday's sitting.
The resolution notes that the Seamen’s Book or the Seafarers Identity Document does not meet International Labour Standards on Seafarers, and highlighted serious security features.
Noting that this has been a serious security issue since 11th September 2000, the resolution highlights that this has caused various issues for seamen including possible fines.
Further noting that the Maldives depends on sea travelers, it further called to "restructure" the transport ministry, to provide the best services to the people.
The resolution also included concerns of seamen, including being required to travel abroad to do medicals.
It also calls to train both sexes and provide the work experience, through joint programme's with friendly nations of under a government loan scheme.
Furthermore, it requires logistic and shipping companies to appoint locals to senior posts, and seeks to introduce the Merchant Shipping Act.
