Mohamed Najah, the suspect in Mariyam Shireen’s murder, has been released.
Shireen’s body was found in a trash heap at a construction area in Male’ in December of 2009.
Najah, the former lover of the deceased, was cleared of murder by the Criminal Court in 2015. Afterwards, the state had appealed at the High Court.
Najah failed to arrive at the High Court hearing on Tuesday. The Correctional Service sent a letter to the court, stating that he was released in April after being granted a presidential pardon for a drug-related conviction.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has reduced the sentences of 201 convicts since assuming office, on the condition that they have served one fourth of the sentence and have shown good behavior.
