President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed have departed on a state visit to Singapore on Saturday.

While the first couple are accompanied by a special delegation, the trip comes after an official invitation extended by the Singaporean government earlier this month.

The President’s Office revealed that the trip intends to strengthen bilateral ties with the Southeast Asian nation and is expected to reinvigorate cooperation between both countries on a myriad of fields including security, trade, health and education among several other spheres.

During his trip, Solih is scheduled to meet Singaporean President, Halimah Yacob and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for discussions.

The talks are expected to reflect the current status of relations and illuminate further avenues for constructive engagement, revealed the President’s Office.

Solih is also scheduled to attend a banquet hosted by President Yacob in his honor and will be meeting with members of the Maldivian community living there.

The President will be listening to concerns and perspectives gained from experiences the Maldivian community has had in Singapore.

Further, Solih will also be escorted to site visits at Singapore’s ISD Counter-Terrorism Center, and Pulau Semaku Landfill managed by Singapore’s National Environment Agency.

This will help the Maldives seek knowledge from the country in security and waste management, said the President’s Office.

While this will be the president’s first official trip to the Southeast Asian nation, he had traveled there in February this year.
