Nasheed ends Sri Lanka visit, departs to London

Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently in asylum under the British government, has ended his consequential visit to Sri Lanka and departed for London.
Nasheed arrived in Sri Lanka on the 29th of January, for his second trip to the country after his self-banishment. His last trip to Colombo before this was in August.
His latest visit to Sri Lanka had allowed Nasheed to participate in a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) national assembly for the first time since the 13-year jail in 2015.
The party had made a set of weighty decisions, namely to boycott the 2018 presidential elections if a candidate of the party’s choosing is not allowed to contest.
Nasheed had announced that he would contest in the party primaries as well, in what is also his first press conference since the verdict.
The opposition leader had also met with the Sri Lankan President, Vice President, US Ambassador Atul Keshap, British Ambassador James Dauris, Australia's High Commisioner Bryce Hutchesson, Canada's High Commissioner Shelley Whiting, and the Ambassador of Germany, Jörn Rhode.
