Journalists have received fake messages from North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam’s phone claiming that he has withdrawn his bid for parliament speaker.

The message states that Aslam has withdrawn his bid on the instruction of former President Mohamed Nasheed, leader of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

It also states that Aslam will support Vilufushi MP-elect Hassan Afeef for the position, according to Nasheed’s wishes.

Aslam has confirmed that the messages are fake.

Along with Afeef and Aslam, five members of MDP have expressed interest in becoming speaker. The others are Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam, Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim, and Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef.

Nasheed has vouched for Aslam for the position of speaker while President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that Afeef is one of the most capable persons for the role.
