Maldivians suspected to be involved in abduction of Bangladeshi worker
The kidnappers had demanded MVR 40,000 as ransom

Police have arrested suspects involved in the kidnapping of a 29-year-old Bangladeshi worker.

Its officers patrolling capital Malé City had been notified of an abduction at around 2:50am on Thursday, with the kidnappers demanding MVR 40,000 as a ransom. Noting that they had demanded the ransom from a friend of the Bangladeshi worker, police said that he was to drop it off near Kangaroo Kids preschool.

Police said that they had apprehended one of the suspects, also an expatriate, that went to pick up the cash, and that he was ordered to direct them to where the worker was being held; at an alleyway on Nikagas Magu in the Mahchangoalhi ward of the city.

Police said that the worker had been assaulted and mugged.

While the suspects are to have fled prior to the police’s arrival, it said that further investigation shows the involvement of Maldivians.

Police’s Serious and Organized Crime Department is investigating the case.
